A Friendship That Endured

For more than five decades, Mary Ann McKenzie and Jane Craghead shared life’s joys and challenges together.

The two met while studying education at the University of North Texas and quickly became inseparable. Jane devoted her career to teaching children with profound disabilities, a calling that reflected her strength, compassion, and generous spirit.

Years of physically demanding work eventually led to chronic back problems and multiple surgeries. In 2016, complications from her final surgery resulted in repeated hospitalizations, and Jane’s condition continued to worsen.

Mary Ann never left Jane’s side.

After months of uncertainty, doctors explained that if Jane survived, she would be bedridden and unable to communicate. The two friends had talked about these possibilities long before, and Mary Ann knew what Jane would have wanted.

When hospice was recommended, she chose Community Healthcare of Texas, and Jane was admitted to the Hospice House at Huguley.

Over the next two weeks, Mary Ann experienced care that extended far beyond medical treatment. Nurses cared for Jane with tenderness and dignity, while every member of the team—from caregivers to the housekeeping staff—offered compassion and comfort.

“The people there made an unbearable situation bearable,” Mary Ann recalled.

Jane died peacefully surrounded by the care and respect she deserved, giving Mary Ann the comfort of knowing she had honored her friend’s wishes.

Years later, what Mary Ann remembers most is not just the exceptional care Jane received, but the kindness shown to them both during one of life’s most difficult moments.
