Dementia-Specific Respite Care Program Launch

Community Healthcare of Texas is proud to announce the launch of its dementia-specific respite care program, made possible through a $125,000 grant from the Center for Dementia Respite Innovation (CDRI). This initiative is designed to provide much-needed relief for caregivers supporting people living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

“With the support of the CDRI grant, we’re able to provide essential respite for the caregivers of our patients who have been walking this difficult journey for a long time,” said Parrish Horton-Cox, Vice President of Hospice Operations at Community Healthcare of Texas. “Caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias can be emotionally and physically exhausting. This grant allows caregivers to take time to rest and recharge, knowing their loved one is receiving high-quality, dementia-specific care. We’re deeply grateful to be able to enhance the support and services we’ve provided to patients and families in our community for the past 30 years.”

Why Respite Care Matters

There are more than 11 million unpaid caregivers in the U.S. providing care for people living with dementia. Many struggle with stress, exhaustion, and burnout, yet access to respite care remains limited. This program aims to bridge that gap by offering caregivers flexible, compassionate care solutions so they can take a much-needed break.

What This Means for Caregivers

Through this program, Community Healthcare of Texas offers:

  • In-home respite visits– compassionate, in-home support for current hospice patients, allowing caregivers time to rest or attend to personal needs.
  • Extended overnight inpatient respite care– extended respite support at our Hospice House at Huguley. This is beyond what is typically covered by Medicare or private insurance, ensuring caregivers have access to additional time for rest when they need it most.
  • Specialized dementia care support– provided by trained staff and volunteers with expertise in dementia care.
  • Therapeutic enhancements – including sensory activities, music therapy, and massage therapy designed to promote comfort, relaxation, and meaningful engagement.
