Medical Students Offer Comfort Through Song

Fort Worth, Texas – February 25, 2020

Twice a month medical students from the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (HSC) set aside their textbooks and stethoscopes and gather at Community Healthcare of Texas – Hospice House Downtown to bring comfort through song.

The students from HSC’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM)  call themselves the Hospice Choir, and while this isn’t part of their formal medical training, choir members say it is a great reminder of why they are studying medicine.

The all-volunteer acapella group is currently led by Katherine Nguyen, a 2nd-year medical student at TCOM. “In our interactions with hospice patients and patient families, we are reminded of how precious life is,” shares Nguyen. “The choir has shown me how much of an impact one person can have on a family and when I take care of my future patients, I will be caring for the whole family.”

Just as her predecessor did, Ms. Nguyen will pass the leadership of the choir to another medical student at the end of this year and the tradition of providing comfort care through song will continue.
