Community Healthcare of Texas Launches Palliative Care Program

Community Healthcare of Texas, the state’s largest not-for-profit provider of end-of-life care services, is now offering in-home palliative care for patients across North Texas.

“Several years ago, we began looking at how to expand our existing services to meet the growing needs of our community,” explained Becky Shumake, Senior Director of Palliative Care at Community Healthcare of Texas. “Now, with our palliative care program, no matter where a patient is in the progression of their illness, we have an option for them and can walk with them.”

Palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life for the patient and their loved ones while managing the symptoms, pain, and stress of a serious illness. Unlike hospice care, which is for patients with a life expectancy of six months or less, palliative care is available for a patient at any stage in their illness. Additionally, palliative care patients can continue to receive treatments that may cure their disease.

Community Healthcare of Texas currently offers palliative care services in the Fort Worth, Dallas, and Cleburne areas. However, according to Shumake, admissions to the program have exceeded initial expectations, and the organization is currently accelerating plans to expand the program into Waco and surrounding areas.

“Just as we do with our hospice program, our palliative care team works with each patient and their family to create individualized care plans to meet their specific needs,” said Shumake. “For more than 26 years, Community Healthcare of Texas has been committed to providing the highest quality patient-centered care available to the communities we serve. Our new palliative care program is just an extension of that commitment.”
