The Gift of Today

Nathan Lin was only seven years old when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. But to his family, he was never defined by his diagnosis.

He was a joyful little boy with an extraordinary spirit who loved life and inspired everyone around him. Through surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and even a clinical trial, Nathan continued to laugh, dream, and embrace each day. One of his favorite memories came when he fulfilled a dream by signing a ceremonial letter of intent to swim for TCU, surrounded by student-athletes who celebrated him like one of their own.

As Nathan’s condition worsened in the spring of 2016, his family chose Community Healthcare of Texas and their Little Doves Pediatric Hospice program to provide care at home, trusting they would receive compassionate, responsive support during the most difficult time of their lives.

The Community Healthcare of Texas care team helped Nathan’s parents navigate decisions no family should ever have to make. They answered questions, offered comfort, and gently guided them through each step of Nathan’s journey.

On Mother’s Day, a member of the care team recommended a children’s book, I Wonder What You Will Do on Your First Day in Heaven. As Cathy sat beside her son and read its pages aloud, the story gave her the words she needed for one of the hardest conversations a mother could ever have.

Nathan died peacefully in his mother’s arms on June 3, 2016.

Today, Nathan’s family treasures the memories they created together and the compassionate care that surrounded them throughout his journey.

From a thumbprint necklace lovingly created for Cathy to the comforting words of a well-worn children’s book, the gifts they carry are reminders that hospice is about more than caring for a patient. It is about walking beside families with compassion, helping them find moments of peace, love, and hope, even amid heartbreak.
