Community Healthcare of Texas Statement on the Passing of President Jimmy Carter

Community Healthcare of Texas is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former President Jimmy Carter and extends its warmest condolences and sympathies to the entire Carter family. President Carter, a beloved leader and humanitarian, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He was 100 years old, making him the longest-lived president in U.S. history.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, President Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. A champion for peace, human rights, and global development, President Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts in finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advancing democracy and human rights, and promoting economic and social progress worldwide.

Community Healthcare of Texas was honored to learn on February 18, 2023, through the Carter Center, that President Carter had chosen to entrust his care to hospice. This decision provided him with the opportunity to live his final chapter to the fullest, surrounded by the love of his family. It also allowed his loved ones to celebrate his life while he was still present to share in those moments. Hospice care is often misunderstood as a sign of giving up; however, studies consistently show that patients and their families experience an improved quality of life, better pain management, and reduced physical and emotional distress when hospice is chosen.

“Nationally, the median length of stay on hospice is only 18 days,” said Viki Jingle, CEO of Community Healthcare of Texas. “I hope that President Carter’s experience further highlights the many benefits hospice can provide to patients and their families, particularly when chosen early. Hospice is not about dying but about living with dignity and quality.”

President Carter is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on November 19, 2023. Together, they exemplified a remarkable partnership dedicated to service, compassion, and unwavering love.

As we honor President Carter’s life and legacy, Community Healthcare of Texas reaffirms its commitment to providing exceptional hospice care to those in need. His choice to embrace hospice care underscores the profound impact it can have, not only for patients but for their families and communities as well.
