Two Generations, One Journey

Before Thomas Gordon Laux was born, he was already surrounded by love.

In 2008, Tom and Deidrea Laux were preparing to welcome their first child when a routine ultrasound revealed concerns about their baby’s development. Their son, Thomas, was later diagnosed with Trisomy 13, a life-limiting chromosomal condition.

As the family faced an uncertain future, Thomas’ grandfather, Norman Laux, stood beside them with love and support. He was there to welcome Thomas when he was born and later held his grandson during his final hours, moments he would cherish for the rest of his life.

Following Thomas’ diagnosis, Community Healthcare of Texas began caring for the family through its Little Doves Pediatric Hospice program. The team helped Deidrea and her family prepare for what was ahead while focusing on what mattered most, creating meaningful moments together and ensuring Thomas was surrounded by comfort and love.

With the support of Little Doves, Thomas’ parents were able to bring him home after his birth. For five precious days, the family created memories together before saying goodbye on July 4, 2008.

Although Thomas’ life was brief, his impact was lasting. In the years that followed, Norman honored his grandson’s memory by often visiting Thomas’ gravesite and leaving behind small tributes—including golf balls, a meaningful gesture from a grandfather who loved the game.

Sixteen years later, Community Healthcare of Texas became part of the Laux family’s story once again.

After Norman was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2021, his health gradually declined. As his condition progressed and complications from diabetes became more frequent, the family turned to Community Healthcare of Texas for palliative care.

The team helped Norman and his family navigate advanced illness by providing guidance, coordinating care, and helping prevent unnecessary hospital visits. Their support gave the family peace of mind knowing they had a trusted partner by their side.

In May 2026, shortly after his 94^th birthday, Norman transitioned to hospice care. Because the family already knew and trusted Community Healthcare of Texas, the transition was seamless. Today, Norman receives care from a dedicated hospice team that includes a nurse, aide, social worker, chaplain, and a volunteer who, like Norman, is also a military veteran.

Thomas and Norman’s journeys were separated by nearly two decades, but they are connected by love, family, and the compassionate care provided by Community Healthcare of Texas.

From supporting a family cherishing the brief life of a newborn to caring for a grandfather in the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease, Community Healthcare of Texas has walked alongside the Laux family through some of life’s most meaningful moments.

Their story reflects 30 years of care. Meeting patients and families wherever they are and providing comfort, dignity, and compassion through every chapter of life.
